Lonehill Property

Lonehill is a beautiful, upper middle class village community comprising some 5000 residential households. The Lonehill property region is described as being safe, self-managed, self-contained and pleasant to live in, while allowing for an unrivalled quality of life for its residents. The success of Lonehill is largely founded on the region having a professionally active, well organised community initiative driven by its Residents’ Association, the LRA.

The Lonehill area includes greater Lonehill, an upper-east side, Beverley and Pineslopes. Lonehill is approximately 28 km from the centre of Johannesburg, north of Bryanston and just east of the Fourways property. Excellent access to surrounding areas is provided from Willam Nicol Drive to the N1 circular highway and via Main Road Bryanston north and south.

Designed in the 1970s as a “village in a garden” by local property developers Buchners in conjunction with JCI (Johannesburg Consolidated Investment) Lonehill rests peacefully flush to its unique landmark ‘koppie’ and picturesque Loch. The huge granite boulders on the Lonehill Koppie are very old. There is evidence of Stone Age activity and also of a pastoral society that lived here over 500 years ago. Recent history reveals that Lonehill was consolidated and named in 1934 by an early pioneer Simon Notten, from the farms Zevenfontein and Rietfontein, which were first registered in 1896. The ‘koppie’ was called Bobbejaankranz in those days.

Lonehill properties are relatively new. There are many lovely individual homes, exclusive and low density cluster developments, as well as over 75 sectional title complexes that make up the 5000 plus households. While many of the residents fit the mature parent, golden nest or left alone lifestyle category, there are also a large number of new parents and young couples populating townhouse developments. This gives Lonehill an equal mix of both young and older people.

While it is essentially residential, the Lonehill area  scene has also attracted business and there are five office park nodes, as well as several important retail components.

Most residents and businesses contribute to a capital fund which provides for improved infrastructure and ongoing maintenance. Under the control of an Estate Manager, Lonehill has its own maintenance team to keep the suburb in pristine condition. Public areas are kept free of litter, graffiti and illegal signage. The Koppie and Loch parkland areas are maintained for residents’ enjoyment and most municipal services are supplemented. Lonehill also boasts an advanced community management system, with its own Joint Operations Centre located in Studio Park.

The function that has enjoyed the most significant improvement is that of security. The LRA is renowned for its zero tolerance approach to crime and residents have established a powerful, proactive anti-crime initiative. Residents contract their own security to the LRA, who in turn contract a service provider who manages overall security for the suburb. There is a dedicated control room, 24-hour reaction vehicles, motorbikes and street patrolmen, which comprise an integrated network of over 70 radio-linked guards.

Lonehill residents enjoy access to shopping venues, health and beauty establishments, doctors’ rooms, veterinarian facilities, restaurants, entertainment areas and most essential community services at the Lonehill Mall, as well as the Leaping Frog and Pineslopes centres. The entire Fourways quadrant is less than five minutes away, with its smorgasbord of services, features and attraction.

Education is an important factor in Lonehill, starting with an abundance of nursery schools and crèches. Crawford College provides a solid learning environment in the heart of the suburb. Alternatives thereto include St. Peters Prep, Dainfern College, Bryanston Dual Medium, Michael Mount Waldorf and the Heron Bridge College close by.

The Montecasino Leisure Complex, Design Quarter and Cedar Square are all in the vicinity. For the very active there is the option of the Bryanston County Club and Sports Club, Leeukop Golf Club and Vodacom World of Golf. There are Virgin Active centres in Lonehill and Fourways Mall, and a Planet Fitness at the Buzz Shopping Centre. A Run/Walk for Life is also active from Lonehill.

Lonehill is served by the Intercare Clinic, Fourways Life and Sunninghill Hospitals and also has its own Sports Clinic. Local churches include a Methodist ministry which takes care of residents’ spiritual needs. The LRA’s vision of creating an upmarket Lonehill property community, where residents are free to live, shop and safely exercise in beautiful surroundings, is close to realisation. Community efforts via the LRA have contributed not only to an aesthetic value and a safe and secure environment, but also to the maintenance of sound South Africa property values and an excellent return on investment.
