Parktown Property

Parktown is one of the oldest residential suburbs of Johannesburg and is situated between Westcliff and Saxonwold. It is an area of approximately a 100kms² with the M1 to the north, Jan Smuts Avenue to the west, Houghton Drive to the east and Empire Road to the south. Today the face of the Parktown property region has changed, and it comprises the different nodes, the first being the area adjacent to Jan Smuts Avenue up to the Ridge, the second being a central- and the third, an office node. This is itself split into three precincts, the old downtown, the green area and a newer region, situated around the Sunnyside Park Hotel including the Isle of Houghton. Excellent access is afforded from the M1, from Jan Smuts Avenue, Houghton Drive and Empire Road.  This property in South Africa is truly unique. 


Parktown property has enjoyed a long, colourful and fascinating history dating back to the early 1890’s when its pioneers, the “Randlords”, Mining Magnates, entrepreneurs and t architects of that period chose Parktown, with its magnificent views to the Magaliesberg and over the green Sachsonwald, as the suburb in which they would build their extravagant, baronial mansions. Some of these homes are still in existence today.


Today, while Parktown is a mix of early 19th century homes, national monuments, businesses and institutions, the emphasis is on health, medical care and education. It remains one of Johannesburg’s elite suburbs due to its accessibility, attractiveness and rich history. Parktown  enjoys excellent upkeep with well-maintained neighbourhoods and homes in sound structural condition, exceptionally high owner investment and a good resale reputation. Parktown residents enjoy a high social status, with upper income levels being prevalent.


Parktown property comprises homes that are large and very stately, some Victorian, some English Edwardian and many in the eclectic blend of Cape Dutch and European, which was constructed using local materials.
