Rivonia Property
It is hard to imagine when looking at the modern landscape of Rivonia property, that it was an outspan stop on the old wagon trail from Pretoria to Johannesburg, less than 100 years ago. In fact, Rivonia was one of the only Sandton suburbs that grew organically and did not owe its existence to expansion from Johannesburg. Over time, as more people moved into the area, Rivonia became an ever-expanding rural village surrounded by large plots based on the old 1 morgan (8, 000m²) standard. It was populated by a class of horse-riding landed gentry.
Key milestones in Rivonia’s history include the famous Rivonia Trial in October 1963, the municipal promulgation of Sandton in 1969, the opening of Sandton City in 1974, as well as the incorporation of Sandton into the Johannesburg MetroCouncil in 1994. Today the Rivonia property region is one of the most affluent, residential and business districts in Sandton, and is regarded as a prime, upper-middle class suburb that is well-maintained and enjoys high social status. In fact, Rivonia is the ideal location, highly desirable and much in demand.
Rivoinia lies between Bryanston, Woodmead, Gallo Manor, and Morningside. Its main access route on Rivonia Road is the extension of Oxford Road, and runs some 15km north to Witkoppen Road, its northern boundary. Here, the interchange joins the N1 highway. Rivonia Road literally has a modern residential and commercial “buffer” development along its entire length.
The residential nature of Rivonia has changed in the last 30 years. The old farmhouses and rural multi-acre plots in its inner core have disappeared – replaced by large, 4-bedroom family homes on 4, 000m² freehold stands with gardens, pool and tennis court. The suburban streets are remarkably quiet and beautifully treed. Both very exclusive- and less expensive secure, full title cluster homes have been built throughout Rivonia, as well as a number of high density multi-unit, sectional title townhouses. The more affordable of these tend to be located on the outer core, facing the main arterials.
The most significant change in the landscape of the Rivonia property region has been the development of shopping malls, cobbled streets, boulevards and pedestrian walkways. Rivonia boasts no less than 14 different shopping malls, mainly centred around Rivonia Road, in the Rivonia Boulevard. Most venues house at least one national retail chain, chic boutiques, essential retail services, restaurants, fast-food outlets, bistros and coffee bars. Best known of the malls are Rivonia Mews, Centre, Junction, Strip, The Cloisters, The Pavilion, Atrium, The Wedge, Mutual Mews & Village, and the Riverside Shopping Centre off Bryanston Drive.
Rivonia not only has some of its own famous schools, like Redhill and King David College, but is also within striking distance of numerous others. In addition to the Medi-clinic in the Morningside property area or Sunninghill Hospital, the Sandton Surgical Day Centre is found just off Rivonia and School Roads. Planet Fitness has a MegaClub, while Virgin Active has centres in Morningside, Strathavon and Sunnighill.
The Bryanston Organic Market always attracts natural, healthy interest and the fun seekers are not too far from the Montecasino Leisure Complex in Fourways. Naturally Sandton City, The Village Walk and Nelson Mandela Square provide a host of shopping and entertainment. Sport enthusiasts have the Vodacom World of Golf, Johannesburg Country Club, Megawatt Park Club, River Club Golf Club and the Jewish Guild on their doorstep; while The Ernest Ullman is a delightful park and recreation centre often frequented my nature enthusiasts.
Rivonia has most religious denominations present, and there are numerous places of worship, including the Chabad Sandton, Gallo Manor and Strathavon, Ohr Somayach Synagogues in Morningside and Gallo Manor. There is also a mosque and Rivonia has a Catholic Church and both Methodist and Anglican Churches close by.
Rivonia has become a most exciting place to live, work and play. The access to other parts of Gauteng is great and the area has every conceivable essential service on offer, a huge selection of retail and a virtually unlimited choice of recreation and entertainment. As the Sandton CBD and Central Improvement Districts grow, so more pressure will be placed on its neighbouring suburbs. An investment in Rivonia will not only ensure a fantastic lifestyle opportunity, but also brilliant returns.
